Lounge on Fire does not make music for volcanoes—they just sound like one. Their volatile fusion of brass, funk, and psychedelia creates an all-consuming maelstrom of sound, and like the mighty rumble of an erupting crater, they’re a singular force that’s impossible to ignore.
The band are seasoned road warriors who have extensively toured the northwestern United States and British Columbia, tallying nearly 300 shows in the past 9 years. They’ve built their cult following through word of mouth and unforgettable performances, where percussive-yet-elegant guitar lines and rapid-fire vocals flow across a pulse-pounding bedrock of drum and bass, all accentuated by the fiery mixture of trumpet, trombone, and saxophone.
There’s no typical Lounge on Fire fan—at any given show, the dress code sits somewhere between “David Bowie’s Disco Era” and “Live, Laugh, Lysergic Acid.” The band itself is inspired by a diverse range of artists, including Cake, LCD Soundsystem, Modest Mouse, Chicago, Talking Heads, Tower of Power, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Vulfpeck. They’re an indie group with the boisterous attitude of a touring funk band, a dichotomy that’s been developing since the band’s beginning.
Frontman/guitarist Nate Norton and bassist Josh Gilmore met at an open mic jam in 2013 in Boise, Idaho, and immediately hit it off. Their mutual affinity for early 2000’s indie rock implored them to collaborate further. The music they have produced has been as eclectic as their influences, which span from 70’s funk, soul, and disco all the way to 90s grunge and alt-rock including particular foundations in psychedelic music and rock’n’roll. Each member has brought their own set of inspirations to the songwriting process to craft a truly exotic sound. The lineup currently consists of Nate Norton on guitar and vocals, Josh Gilmore on bass guitar, Wade Ronsse on drums, Alan Schwaderer on keyboards, synth, and guitar, Matthew Patterson on tenor and alto saxophones, Bryan Rosenblatt on trombone, and AJ Schinkel on trumpet.
Lounge on Fire birthed their first record in 2017, Lips of Calypso, after gigging for nearly 4 years, which was met with regional acclaim. After more than 3 years in the making due to pandemic-related delays, Lounge on Fire will be self-releasing their sophomore album on February 3rd, 2023. “Tessellated Escher” is the work where Lounge on Fire has discovered their voice, embodying the theme of repeating and breaking patterns of toxic behavior over the course of 8 beat-driven rock ballads.

Portland Oregon junkbox blues duo HILLSTOMP is infamous for digging through the dumps and forgotten backwoods of American music, recycling traditional elements into a refreshing and distinctive brand of do-it-yourself hill country blues stomp. North Mississippi trance blues, a bit of Appalachia, and a dash of punkabilly come clanging and tumbling from assorted buckets, cans and BBQ lids, all drenched in rambunctious slide guitar. Somehow it works.
Despite their homemade instruments and novel approach, Hillstomp is no novelty act.
