Roosevelt Market Gone?

Quite a storm of conversation about what’s happening at the Roosevelt Market on Elm St. in the East End. Preservation Idaho has issued a statement, noting that no one realized the project was going to be so extensive. Above is a photo I took in 2013. New owners took over earlier this year with plans to remodel. The project evidently became complicated by structural issues with the building.

It’s on Elm Street right across from Roosevelt School. I remember the neighborhood market near Park Elementary School in Weiser. It was a traditional candy stop after school. The Roosevelt Market added this “free candy” trick a few years ago. The “brain candy?” Free books.

This is what the Park Street market looked like in Weiser when I saved some change for candy.

Fun Dip candy packets, cinnamon toothpicks and rope watermelon-flavored bubblegum were my favorite treats.

Back to the Roosevelt Market. The reason for the social media alarm is because so much of the structure has been demolished, although the original wall framing is still there and shored up. Here’s what it looked yesterday.

I am keeping a positive view that the structure will be rebuilt to look similar to what was there for more than 100 years.
