To get ready for Idaho’s Jewish Festival formerly known as “Deli Days,” we had a session today from The Moody Jews of Boise! Listeners enjoyed lunch from Port of Subs, and drinks from Idaho Kombucha.
Sunday is a full day of celebration, with live music, a wellness program, nature walk, amazing deli food from Goldstein’s Bagels, and tour of the synagogue. Oliver told us in our first meeting, this will be a peaceful and non-political celebration of their culture.
I’ll never forget the first time I heard the kind of music in the video below. Many years ago, I was in NYC for a rock convention. During the day, I wandered around Manhattan. I fell in love with all of the cultures and different kinds of people. At one point, I went into a very nice antique shop. No one was in the shop but the owner. I wondered at how different East Coast antiques were from what I’d seen, but then I stopped in my tracks, and listened. There was a music I’d never heard before. I’d listened to many kinds of world music, but this was new to me. Clarinets, happiness, moodiness. I fell in love. I asked the owner what I was listening to, and she said, “Klezmer Music.” I’ve listened to it ever since.
This winter, look forward to a holiday performance from The Moody Jews of Boise. We hope to have them back in at that time. This is a Hannukah song, it translates to “8 Little Candles.”
There’s a workshop tomorrow from Nani Vazana about Ladino Culture. It’s free, and a great intro to Idaho’s Jewish Festival.
Sunday performances include The Moody Jews of Boise, Hot Club Les Bois, Nani Vazana, Switch in Time Jazz Orchestra, and a dance performance. The events start about 9:30 am September 1st, and will continue until nearly 8:30 pm. We’ll be out for a live broadcast from 9-11 am. Idaho’s Jewish Festival is FREE and all-ages, at CABI, 11 N. Latah.
