We’ve been asking for donations of new, unwrapped toys for the Toys for Tots program, locally organized by U.S Marine Corps Reserve personnel from 4th Tanks Bn, Charlie Company. Drop off donations, or purchase from the toy aisle at any Treasure Valley Albertsons. Donations are collected through December 20.
I thought I would share some behind-the-scenes information after volunteering in the Toys for Tots warehouse at Gowen Field.
Donations are sorted into giant bins, generally classified for age and gender. And there’s a big stocking stuffer bin.
Our assignment was to choose a list from a tall stack of requests, and look it over to get to know the family. Grab a shopping cart and start thoughtfully choosing gifts from the bins. Each child receives a large and small toy/gift, a stocking stuffer and a book/arts and crafts kits. Volunteers like to add a family game in the bags, too. For small children on the list, they also receive a stuffed animal. The wish lists are stapled to the bags and put into bins that are picked up by distribution agencies throughout the Treasure Valley.
The bins that were overflowing were the ones for toddlers, and all the bins for boys. So many remote-control cars and trucks, and Legos. By the way, batteries are included when needed for any toy.
But the bin for girls ages 10-12 was empty when I was filling wish lists. The arts and crafts supply was also lean, as was the plush animal bin.
It’s easy to help with donations of stuffed animals and arts and crafts supplies – everything from kits, to crayons and markers, to coloring books.
For girls 10-12, it can be a little trickier. Here are some suggestions, thanks to tips from listeners. Purses, fanny packs, tiny backpacks, mini skateboards, eye shadow kits (no nail polish or cologne – liquids cannot be distributed), bluetooth speakers, ukuleles, advanced alarm clocks, bongo drums, Lego sets, acoustic guitars, bluetooth headphones, pop culture pillows/accessories, jewelry holders and boxes. Can you think of anything else?
Thank you for helping. If you want to volunteer at the warehouse, fill out the form here.
